The Oceanic Peace Revolution Fellowship, entitled “Peace In + Peace Out = Sustainable World Peace”, will bring together a group of young people from all Oceanian countries who are interested in learning and exploring self-development as a primary means to make this world a better place to live. This retreat aims to promote a culture of peace, peace education, conflict prevention and youth empowerment through the primary means of self-development and meditation.

We live in a world which is often chaotic, stressful and where many people live their lives in situations which are out of their control. By developing personal skills, people can learn to be less reactive to emotions, stress, and challenging external environments and instead become proactive towards real and meaningful world change. Despite the drought affecting the nation, Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr. trumpeted economic gains achieved during his stewardship – including economic growth, a budget surplus, the creation of a marine sanctuary and a cost-of-living-allowance increase for government workers.

Driven by high tourism arrivals, Palau’s economy has experienced high growth despite economic growth slowing down in other nations in the Pacific, according to the latest Asian Development Bank forecast for 2016.

The forecast said that Palau’s growth is only at 3 percent this year, and the slowdown is due to the capacity constraints of the country’s tourism sector. The ADB however sees growth in 2017 with 7 percent Gross Domestic Product growth.

The first international conference to support the achievement of the globally agreed target under the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14):  Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development, was held in Rome, Italy from March 7-9, 2016.   Sponsored by the Government of Italy, the Ocean Sanctuary Alliance (OSA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the 10×20 Conference focused on target 5: By 2020, conserve at least 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas, consistent with national and international law and based on the best available scientific information.  Palau’s late Ambassador for Oceans and Seas and former Ambassador to the UN, Stuart J. Beck, was instrumental in organizing this conference as a founder of OSA.

Media practitioners all over the Pacific gather in Palau to collaborate and discuss how the region’s media landscape is transformed due to digital revolution.

Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr., who opened the Pacific Media Summit on March 22, 2016, said his country is expecting to increase its connectivity with the rest of the world with a fiber optic cable connection by 2017.

Samoa’s Steffie Carruthers and Abigail Tere-Apisah from Papua New Guinea are both ranked in the top 950 in the world and were a part of last year’s team that finished fifth of eleven teams in Asia/Oceania Zone Group Two in India.

This year they are joined by 16 year old Ayana Rengiil from Palau, who has represented Pacific Oceania in the Junior Fed Cup and 24 year old Mayka Zima from Tahiti.

Friends of Tobi Island

Friends of Tobi Island is a Hawaii non-profit corporation, whose purposes are to collaborate with the people of Tobi to develop resources, enhance communication, and promote community-building initiatives.  A particular emphasis is on documenting Ramari Hatohobei, a threatened language, and development of a program for cultural repatriation of the entire range of Tobian cultural heritage.  Supporting and maintaining the Friends of Tobi Island website and email list is a primary focus.
